5 Steps to Physician Alignment Using Gainsharing

Share:

Gainsharing provides a stepping stone by beginning the process of getting physicians and hospitals to work together to successfully transition to value-based models.  On November 25, 2014, Becker’s Hospital Review released an article written by myself and AMS VP Anthony Stanowski called “5 steps to physician alignment using gainsharing.”

This article discusses the five steps to physician alignment in “large-scale” gainsharing, which involves all inpatient cases, all inpatient costs and all DRGs except psych, normal deliveries and newborns.  The 5 steps are:

  1. Secure physician buy-in
  2. Provide relevant information
  3. Ensure program meeting core physician requirements
  4. Incorporate best practices
  5. Incentives should reward both improvement and performance.

These steps are the key components in gainsharing programs that AMS implemented in New Jersey and New York, and is in the process of implementing in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Oklahoma.
